Kentucky Transportation Cabinet:
TRIMARC Design Support, Operations and Maintenance

TEC Engineering provided design support to the Northrop Grumman Corporation (Program Manager) for the implementation of the TRIMARC (Traffic Response and Incident Management Assisting the River Cities) Regional ITS system providing coverage to the Greater Louisville Kentucky and Southern Indiana region. The initial system was activated in the summer of 1999 and focused on an 11-mile section of the I-65 corridor. TRIMARC has since expanded to cover over 60 miles of regional interstates and has a strategic plan to expand to over 100 miles of freeway across state lines.

TEC’s role in the TRIMARC system design included the selection, evaluation and placement of field devices including cameras, detectors, and vehicle message signs, and on-going integration of system components. TEC currently provides operations support for TRIMARC, including incident management activities and reporting, as well as a full range of engineering and maintenance services including installation, diagnostics, preventive maintenance, repair/replace/restore actions, and end-to-end integration.

Project Results:
Using the latest Internet development tools, the TRIMARC web site provides near-real time information automatically from TRIMARC systems.  The Web site was recognized in 2003 by FHWA as one of the four best Traveler Information Web Sites in the United States.  TRIMARC has also been integrated with the statewide traffic operations center and 511system using XML protocol consistent with the ITS National Architecture to convey incident information.  TRIMARC has also won several national awards for use of technology in the investigation of high-incident intersections, including a 2003 National Highway Safety Award from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Roadway Safety Foundation (RSF) and an ITS America “Best of ITS” award in the categories of Return on Investment and Research.
